Day 70 - Sesriem Camp to Nauta Dam Bush Camp via Sossusvlei 510 km
It was an even earlier start than usual, as we had to pack up our campsite and make it the the dunes before sunrise! Heading into the Namib-Naukluft National Park it was a 60 km drive to the famous Sossusvlei Dunes. We arrived just before sunrise which is the best time to view them as the sun rises the light falls on half of the dune leaving the other half in the dark, a photographers paradise! It also helps that it is cooler in the morning as it usually get bloody hot during the day.
We decided to see Deadvlei as it was the best for photos. We paid $110 Namibia Dollars for a 4x4 to drive us the 5km out to the dune, after a short walk the dunes gave way to a large open dried up riverbed with petrified trees all around, breath takingly beautiful!!
Make sure to pack water, sunscreen and have comfortable footwear. The mornings start on the cool side but it gets very hot very soon and getting up the sand dunes is not easy task! Sand gets everywhere and wearing closed shoes is the best as the sand gets extremely hot!
We started making out way back to the main parking area at 10am. It was time to start the drive back to the main gate where we had a quick lunch stop before carrying on towards the Karas region. We arrived in Bethanie late afternoon but decided to continued on to shorten the next day's drive arriving at our Bush Camp as night fell. It was frigid cold and the wind was fierce kicking up sand and threatening to blow away our campsite. We were cook group so we had the fun task of fighting the elements to get Dinner, Breakfast & Lunch for the next day. We managed to get it all done in 2 hours with extra sand in most of the food for good measure before crawling into our tent to hide from the driving wind.
