Day 54 Nairobi to Cape Town
Dancing with the DevilWe were up at 04h30 and ready to go shortly after, we headed off to meet our 06h00 taxi to the ZIM border which was thankfully early and we managed to get to the border dead on 06h00. We were first in line with Paul & Celeste and passed through immigration with no problems.
We then walked the 2 km to the Zambian border, crossing the Victoria Falls Bridge where we got some fantastic shots of the gorge below. We passed through Zambian immigration without any issues and started the 1.5 km walk to the Royal Livingston Resort. Three Quarters of the way to the resort a guy we had asked back at the border crossing for directions pulled over and gave us a lift the rest of the way. It turned out he was our guide and after the formalities of checking our voucher for confirmation and seeing zebras grazing in the middle of the resort we were in a small aluminium boat speeding down Zambezi Rapids towards Livingston Island. When we arrived we were walked through a small encampment and to our first view of the Falls which took our breath away. We moved on even closer to the main outflow getting an even more impressive view of the vast volume of water pouring into the ravine below.Next we met David who is the guide who is in pretty much every photo ever taken in Devils pool and he gave us a quick safety brief, before we knew it we were swimming through mild Rapids towards the Pool.
We climbed over a small outcrop of rocks and saw our first glimpse of Devils Pool with raging currents only a meter away pouring into the abyss. We cautiously entered the pool one at a time and David beckoned us over to the edge and that's when the fear factor kicked in. There is no feeling to describe the shear thrill of hanging over the side of a 100 meter waterfall, the closest would be exhilarating.
We spent several minutes posing for photos and took in the magnitude of what we were doing then finally after 30 minutes David ushered us back out and to the safety of land once again. We walked back to the encampment we had passed earlier and sat down to a Royal Livingston Resort breakfast of Eggs Benedict with Coffee and Scones before heading back up the Rapids to the Resort once more. We grabbed a taxi and drove 20km to Livingston Town where we wandered town, had lunch & grabbed some supplies then headed back to the Border and back into ZIM without any problems.
