Sandwich Harbour Tour

Day 68 - Sandwich Harbour

Sandwich Harbour Landy

It was an exciting early start, after breakfast we grabbed our camera gear and met up with Paul, Celeste, Kieran & Liz. We were greeted by Castro (our transfer driver) who drove us the 30 minutes down the coast to Walvis Bay where we met our guide "Tollo" who was a character to say the least!

We bundled ourselves into his converted Land Rover Defender which had recently had a V8 Puma engine put into it and sounded "kickass"!

Leaving Walvis Bay behind, we drove a short distance to view 100's of Flamingos which were feeding on the shoreline. Then is was time to head further down the coast to one of Namibia's largest Salt factory's and as we hit the sand on the way past the factory Tollo kicked the car down a gear surprising us all shooting up one of the dunes to overlook the Salt Flats. We proceeded along the shoreline passing into the Namib-Naukluft National Park which stretches down the west coast of Namibia and into South Africa. We arrived at Sandwich Harbour with the 85 meter dunes towering over us which we climbed and got some great photos of the incredible scenery.

We jumped back in the truck and headed back the way we came then the V8 roared into life and next minute we were screaming up a 35 degree incline, we continued up over several dunes finally arriving at the top of a 120 meter dune where we stopped for a champagne lunch with Oysters, Calamari, Spring Rolls and a Vegetable Cous Cous Salad.

With full bellies we continued on at high speed over the dunes, even going down one backwards which was entertaining to say the least. After a few hours we arrived back at Walvis Bay where we transferred back to Swakopmund. We transferred over to the Dunedin Guest House as Amanpuri had full occupancy and walked across the road for sushi at Food Lovers Market before having an early night for our early start the next morning.
