Day 9 Nairobi to Cape Town
Fatima's Guest House to Discovery Rwanda backpackers, Kigali
After an incredible day yesterday we had a little sleep in before getting our gear back on the truck, having a quick bite to eat then a short drive to the capital of Rwanda. We arrived in to Kigali mid afternoon and checked in to Discovery Rwanda Backpackers. After a tasty dinner and a quick cleanup we called it a night and watched the movie "Hotel Rwanda" as we would be going past the Hotel the next day and on to the Genocide Museum.
Day 10: Nairobi to Cape Town
Kigali, Rwanda to Kabale, Uganda
We set off at 0730 towards the Genocide Museum. On arrival we were greeted by one of the museum representatives and ushered into a room to watch a 10 minute presentation from survivors of the holocaust. We then moved to another building that held artifacts and wall presentations of the events that unfolded it was emotional to say the least as it was very graphic and the survivors accounts of their traumatic experiences sent shivers through us. There was not only information on the Rwandan Genocide but others from around the world and it hit home how lucky we really are. We then moved outside to the burial sites when the bodies of 250,000 were laid to rest but that was only a quarter of total murders and they are continually finding more bodies.
We left the Memorial at 1000 and proceeded through Kigali town seeing the Hotel that the movie "Hotel Rwanda" we based on and the bustling market stalls littering the sidewalks. We slowly left Kigali behind us and headed towards the Ugandan border which we crossed on our way back to Kabale. The crossing back into Uganda was uneventful unlike the last time which was a relief and we had a quick lunch in between the borders before moving on the rest of the crew departed for an overnight at one of the local orphanages that Oasis Overland sponsors leaving us to a rainy evening celebrating our 2 year anniversary. Perfect!
